“The chief task in life is simply this: to identify and separate matters so that I can say clearly to myself which are externals not under my control, and which have to do with the choices I actually control.” — Epictetus
Thursday evening.
The older I get, the more I realize how much energy people spend fighting battles they can never win.
Trying to control other people.
Trying to control outcomes.
Trying to control opinions.
Trying to control tomorrow.
And in the process, they neglect the one thing that was always theirs to command:
Themselves.
The Stoics returned to this lesson again and again.
Not because it is easy.
Because it is essential.
You cannot control whether life is fair.
You cannot control whether markets rise.
You cannot control what others think of you.
But you can control your response.
And that is more power than most people ever learn to use.
A rough season has a way of clarifying these things.
It teaches us where we have influence...
and where we have only attachment.
Wisdom is knowing the difference.
