“Our life is frittered away by detail.”
Thoreau wrote those words nearly two centuries ago.
Before email.
Before notifications.
Before social media.
Before a thousand little things learned how to reach into our pockets and demand our attention.
And still, he saw it.
A life can disappear in pieces.
Not because anything terrible happened.
But because we gave a little of ourselves to everything…
and eventually discovered there wasn’t much left for the things that mattered.
Thoreau’s answer was simple:
“Simplify, simplify.”
I don’t think that means abandoning responsibility or retreating from the world.
I think it means learning to distinguish between what requires our attention…
and what merely asks for it.
There is a difference.
A boat teaches that lesson pretty well.
There are things aboard that matter.
Weather.
Water.
Rigging.
The people you love.
And then there is everything else.
Maybe living deliberately begins there.
Not by adding another thing to our lives.
But by becoming a little more careful about what we allow to fill them.
The sun is getting low.
The harbor is settling down.
And perhaps tonight is a good time to ask:
What filled your day today?
And was it worthy of it?
Fair winds, my friends.
