There is something about Sunday morning that makes the world feel less demanding.
The coffee can wait beside you a little longer.
The harbor hasn’t quite gotten busy yet.
And for a few minutes, there is nowhere else you need to be.
Thoreau understood the value of moments like this.
He went to Walden with very little, not because poverty was the goal, but because he wanted to discover what was enough.
That may be one of the harder questions we ever ask ourselves.
What is enough?
Enough money.
Enough possessions.
Enough recognition.
Enough accomplishment.
Enough plans for whatever comes next.
We spend a remarkable amount of our lives pursuing more without ever deciding when more becomes enough.
And there is always more.
Another dollar.
Another possession.
Another milestone.
Another horizon.
But this morning, sitting quietly while the day wakes up, I wonder whether Thoreau was pointing toward something much simpler.
Perhaps enough isn’t a number we finally reach.
Perhaps it is a moment we finally recognize.
Coffee in the cup.
Rain on the water.
People we love still within reach.
A boat beneath us.
Another morning we were fortunate enough to wake up and see.
Nothing wrong with wanting another horizon.
Sailors always will.
But it would be a shame to spend our whole lives looking toward the next one…
and never notice that, every now and then,
we already have enough.
Good morning, my friends.
