There are evenings when nothing much gets accomplished.
And perhaps that’s all right.
We spend so much of our lives measuring the day by what we finished.
What we built.
What we earned.
What we checked off the list.
Thoreau had a different measure.
He once wrote:
“I had three chairs in my house; one for solitude, two for friendship, three for society.”
Not much of a furniture collection.
But maybe that was the point.
He wasn’t measuring wealth by how many chairs he owned.
He was measuring it by what happened in them.
A quiet moment alone.
A conversation with a friend.
A gathering when company came around.
Maybe we occasionally confuse the things that support a good life with the good life itself.
The chair isn’t the friendship.
The boat isn’t the sunset.
The instrument isn’t the music.
And the clock certainly isn’t the evening.
Sometimes the richest thing we can do is stop trying to accomplish something…
sit down…
and enjoy what is already here.
The sun is going down.
There will be plenty to do tomorrow.
Tonight, perhaps, is simply for living.
Fair winds, my friends.
