Most of us don’t wake up one morning and decide to live someone else’s life.
It happens more quietly than that.
We inherit an idea of success.
We accept somebody else’s definition of security.
We learn what we’re supposed to own, where we’re supposed to go, and what we’re supposed to become.
Then we get busy pursuing it.
Thoreau was suspicious of that kind of life.
He wrote:
“If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer.”
There is something wonderfully freeing in that.
You don’t have to keep pace.
You don’t have to want what everyone else wants.
You don’t even have to explain why the road you’re taking makes sense to you.
A sailor understands this better than most.
There are plenty of people who cannot imagine why anyone would trade a house, a schedule, and a predictable life for a small boat and an uncertain horizon.
And that’s all right.
They hear their drummer.
We hear ours.
The important thing isn’t that everyone understands the life we’ve chosen.
It’s that somewhere along the way…
we actually chose it.
Monday morning is waiting.
Maybe before we start marching, it’s worth listening for a moment.
Whose drum are you following?
Fair winds, my friends.
