Sometimes the day gets away from you.
You had plans.
Things you intended to finish.
A schedule you meant to keep.
Then somebody pours another glass.
A friend tells a story.
The sun is warm.
Nobody seems particularly interested in leaving.
And somewhere along the way, the schedule loses.
Good.
Thoreau didn’t simplify his life so he could become more efficient.
He simplified it so he could become more alive.
There is an important difference.
We talk a lot about managing our time.
Using it wisely.
Making every hour count.
But maybe an hour doesn’t always need to produce something in order to count.
Sometimes it produces a conversation.
A laugh.
A memory.
Sometimes nothing more than the realization that you are sitting among people whose company you enjoy on a beautiful afternoon.
Those hours count too.
Maybe more than some of the others.
The trick, I suppose, is knowing the difference between wasting time…
and spending it well.
Today I didn’t get everything done that I intended.
But sitting here tonight, I’m not entirely convinced that means the day was wasted.
Thoreau went to the woods because he didn’t want to reach the end of his life and discover he had not lived.
Perhaps every now and then, the schedule needs to lose.
Tonight, I’m rather glad it did.
Fair winds, my friends.
