There comes a point when thinking about the life you want has done all it can do.
You have considered it.
Planned for it.
Doubted it.
Probably talked yourself out of it a few times.
Eventually, though, the question becomes much simpler.
Are you going?
Thoreau wrote:
“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.”
We tend to focus on the word confidently.
But I wonder if confidence is really the important part.
Because most worthwhile things I’ve done didn’t begin with much certainty.
There were doubts.
There were risks.
There were plenty of reasons to stay where I was.
Confidence often came later.
After the first step.
After the first mistake.
After discovering that being uncertain and being incapable are not the same thing.
Maybe Thoreau wasn’t asking us to wait until we felt fearless.
Maybe he was telling us to choose a direction and begin moving toward it.
You don’t need the whole chart this morning.
You don’t need to know every harbor between here and wherever you’re going.
You need a heading.
And enough courage to steer toward it.
Yesterday we cast off the line.
Today, let’s put the bow toward something that matters.
The horizon is waiting.
Good morning, my friends.
