Captain Michael: A Thought for the Midwatch
Somewhere along the way, I learned to measure a good watch by how little happened.
No alarm
A Thought for the Midwatch
Somewhere along the way, I learned to measure a good watch by how little happened.
No alarms.
No dragging anchor.
No unexpected weather.
No reason to wake anyone below.
Just the boat doing what boats do and the watchstander paying attention.
Maybe there is something Taoist in that.
We spend so much of life believing that if we are not doing something, nothing is being accomplished.
But sometimes the work is simply to remain awake.
To notice.
To be ready.
And to leave things alone until they actually need us.
Tonight, the boat swings quietly at anchor.
The tide moves beneath her.
The world carries on without any help from me.
And for once, I am content to let it.
