So we dig in.
But yielding does not require becoming something else.
A river bends around a mountain without becoming the mountain.
The tide retreats from the shore without surrendering the sea.
A sail gives to the wind without forgetting what it was made to do.
Perhaps we can do the same.
We can change our minds without abandoning our values.
We can alter course without losing our destination.
We can listen without agreeing.
We can let another person be right without somehow becoming less ourselves.
There is a quiet confidence in that.
The rigid thing must defend its shape.
The flexible thing knows what it is.
Maybe that is why water can afford to yield.
It has nothing to prove.
And perhaps neither do we.
