A Thought for the Midwatch
A branch falls into the river.
For a while, it catches between the rocks and holds its ground.
The water does not argue.
It does not push harder because the branch refuses to move.
It simply keeps flowing.
Around it.
Under it.
Sometimes over it.
Eventually, something gives.
Funny thing is, it is rarely the water.
There are things in my life I have held onto with both hands simply because I had decided they were not supposed to change.
Some of them eventually broke anyway.
Some carried me downstream when I finally let go.
Tonight, I am thinking there may be wisdom in knowing the difference.
Not everything we release is lost.
Sometimes we are simply rejoining the river.
