While doing some research into Bitcoin’s earliest days, I discovered something fascinating: Satoshi may have accidentally leaked his location.
On January 10, 2009, Hal Finney’s original Bitcoin debug log showed another Bitcoin node at:
68.164.57.219:8333
The hostname associated with that IP was:
h-68-164-57-219.lsanca54.dynamic.covad.net
Covad was a residential/ADSL internet provider, and the lsanca hostname points toward the Los Angeles, California area.
The node was operating Bitcoin during its first days and was communicating directly with Hal’s computer. The evidence strongly suggests this was Satoshi’s Bitcoin node.
If that’s correct, Satoshi may have unintentionally exposed the location of the internet connection he was using.
It doesn’t identify Satoshi — the IP was dynamically assigned and could have been temporary — but it’s an incredible early technical clue.
Could Satoshi’s first Bitcoin node have accidentally left us a geographic fingerprint? 🤔
