🕵️‍♂️ A different way of looking at one of Satoshi’s biggest early clues While researching Bitcoin’s earliest network logs, I came across something fascinating: Satoshi may have accidentally exposed a geographic clue. Researchers have previously identified the IP 68.164.57.219, so I’m not claiming to have discovered the IP itself. What caught my attention is what we could potentially do with that clue. On January 10, 2009, Hal Finney’s Bitcoin debug log showed a Bitcoin node at: 68.164.57.219:8333 Its hostname was: h-68-164-57-219.lsanca54.dynamic.covad.net Covad was a residential/ADSL provider, with the hostname pointing toward the Los Angeles area. The node was communicating directly with Hal’s Bitcoin node during Bitcoin’s first days and is widely believed to have been Satoshi’s node. But here’s the question: Instead of simply asking “Where was this IP located?” — can we determine WHO was actually assigned this IP on January 10, 2009? Because it was a dynamically assigned residential IP, today’s geolocation isn’t enough. The real forensic trail would be: Bitcoin node → IP → Covad → historical assignment on that exact date → geographic/network records → potential subscriber → cross-reference with Satoshi’s known activity. That could potentially take an old technical clue much further than previous geographic speculation. I’m not claiming this identifies Satoshi.
