This morning we talked about being here now.
Sounds simple enough.
Until you try to do it.
The moment you say, “This is a perfect moment,” part of you has already stepped outside of it to observe it.
And the moment you try to hold onto it, it becomes memory.
That may be one of the strange things about Now:
You can live it.
But you cannot keep it.
We spend so much effort trying to preserve the good moments and hurry through the difficult ones.
But neither listens.
The sunset fades whether we approve or not.
The storm passes when it passes.
The people sitting beside us change.
So do we.
Maybe presence isn’t about making a moment last.
Maybe it’s about letting the moment be completely what it is—without immediately asking it to become something else.
The Taoists understood that.
Ram Dass understood it.
And perhaps every sailor who ever watched the last sliver of sun disappear beneath the horizon has understood it too.
You don’t hold the moment.
You meet it.
And then you let it go.
Good evening, friends.
