There’s a peculiar little habit most of us have.
We’re almost always leaning toward the next thing.
Sitting at breakfast, thinking about work.
Working, thinking about lunch.
Eating lunch, thinking about what needs doing this afternoon.
Finally sitting down in the evening…
and wondering where the day went.
Nothing stole it.
We just kept arriving a few minutes before ourselves.
I’ve done this with bigger pieces of life too.
Looking forward to the next assignment.
The next port.
The next adventure.
The next chapter.
There’s nothing wrong with anticipation.
A horizon gives us something to steer toward.
But there’s a difference between having a destination and living there before we arrive.
Maybe that’s one of the quiet disciplines of Now.
To make plans without moving into them.
To remember yesterday without moving back there.
To sit completely inside the few square feet of life we actually occupy.
Here.
With these people.
Doing this thing.
For however long it lasts.
Tomorrow will arrive soon enough.
No need to meet it halfway.
Good evening, friends.
