THOUGHT FOR THE MIDWATCH
Not every problem needs to be solved tonight.
That can be difficult to remember when you’re the sort of person who fixes things.
You see the problem.
You start turning it over.
Looking for angles.
Running possibilities.
Before long, you’re working on it even when there isn’t anything useful left to do.
The Stoics understood action.
But they also understood judgment.
There is a difference between working a problem and simply worrying it.
Sometimes you’ve gathered all the information available.
You’ve done what can be done.
The next move belongs to someone else.
Or to tomorrow.
Or perhaps simply to time.
That’s when working the problem takes a different kind of discipline.
Put down the wrench.
Leave it alone.
Get some sleep.
The problem will still be there in the morning.
But you may meet it with better eyes.
Sometimes the next useful thing is nothing at all.
Good night, tomorrow is a new day.
