I’ve been thinking tonight about the things we remember. Not the things we’re supposed to remember. The things we actually do. There are whole years of my life that have become a little fuzzy around the edges. But then there are moments. A cup of coffee with someone who’s been gone a long time. A particular laugh. The smell of a place I haven’t seen in decades. A meal around a crowded table. Standing a quiet watch with somebody and hardly saying a word. Kids laughing somewhere nearby. A dog asleep at my feet. None of those moments announced themselves as important. Nobody stopped and said, “Pay attention. You’re going to want to remember this.” They were just Tuesday afternoons and Sunday mornings and ordinary evenings. And somehow, they stayed. Maybe that’s something worth remembering while we’re busy trying to make life meaningful. We may be looking for meaning in the wrong places. It might already be happening. Right now. In some small, ordinary moment we haven’t thought to appreciate yet. Because when everything else has faded around the edges, sometimes the smallest things are what remains.
