When someone we care about tells us what is troubling them, many of us immediately begin searching for a solution. We offer advice. We explain what we would do. We point out the lesson, identify the problem, and start building a plan. Our intentions may be good. But sometimes we become so busy preparing an answer that we stop listening to the person who is still speaking. Not every honest conversation is a request for repair. Sometimes people need enough room to hear themselves say what they have been carrying. They may not yet know what they think. They may need to circle the subject, fall silent, begin again, and discover the truth somewhere in the telling. Advice can be useful. But advice offered too soon can sound like: Let’s get this uncomfortable thing handled so we can move on. Paying attention requires restraint. It means resisting the urge to fill every silence. It means asking another question instead of telling another story. Sometimes it means saying: “Do you want my thoughts, or do you just need me to listen?” Not every burden can be removed. But some become lighter when another human being is willing to sit quietly and help carry the telling. #PayAttention #WednesdayEvening #WellLivedLife #CrypTok
