The day is coming on gently here. Partly cloudy skies. Birds and howler monkeys greeting the dawn. A third cup of coffee within reach. There is nothing wrong with comfort. We need mornings like this. But comfort cannot teach us everything. Some hardship finds us whether we want it or not. Other hardship we choose. We take the demanding course. Start the difficult project. Leave the safe harbor. Have the uncomfortable conversation. Train when nobody is watching. Attempt something we are not certain we can finish. Not because suffering makes us virtuous. Not because everything worthwhile must hurt. We choose hard things because capability has to be exercised. You cannot learn what you can carry while everything is light. You cannot discover how you respond under pressure while nothing is at stake. You cannot build confidence by waiting until you feel confident. Every difficult thing willingly undertaken becomes a quiet conversation with yourself: Let’s see what I can do. Sometimes you succeed. Sometimes you fall short. Either way, you return knowing more than you did before you began. Comfort gives us a place to recover. Hardship gives us something to recover with—strength, judgment, courage, patience, and the earned knowledge that we have met difficult things before. So enjoy the coffee. Listen to the birds. Take in the easy morning. Then, when the moment comes, choose something hard enough to discover who you are becoming. You don’t always have to wait for the suck to find you. Sometimes you walk out and meet it. #EmbraceTheSuck, #ChooseTheHardThing, #CharacterIsEverything, #CrypTok
