“Sail forth — steer for the deep waters only…”
— Walt Whitman
Late in the day, when the light softens and the wind settles into rhythm, I sometimes find myself looking back at the wake trailing behind the boat.
For a little while, it cuts clearly across the water.
Then slowly… it disappears.
There’s probably a lesson in that.
We spend so much of life worrying about every mistake, every wrong turn, every awkward moment or failed plan—as though the sea keeps permanent record of our passage.
But the ocean doesn’t hold wakes forever.
Neither does life.
Most things that once felt enormous eventually dissolve into distance.
What remains is not perfection.
Not a flawless charted course.
What remains is whether we sailed at all.
Whether we loved deeply.
Whether we learned.
Whether we had the courage to leave safe water when something inside called us farther out.
A life well-lived is not measured by a wake that lasts forever.
It is measured by whether we were truly underway while we had the chance.
