Years later, after the farm had sat neglected for far too long, I found myself walking those same woods again.
Only now they were overgrown.
Fallen limbs across old paths.
Vines reclaiming clearings we once played in.
Fence lines disappearing back into the forest.
But as I walked, memories began returning with almost every step.
That big oak where we stopped to rest.
The hickory tree beside the creek.
The stretch of woods where the muscadine vines hung thick enough to swing from.
Time had changed the forest.
But somehow the forest still remembered us.
And maybe that is part of what reconnecting with old places really does:
it reminds us that while life moves forward, pieces of who we were still live quietly beneath the surface.
Waiting for us to slow down enough to notice.
