Thoughts for the Mid-Watch
Years ago, on a delivery passage, I asked my wife to take the helm while I grabbed a little sleep.
“Just keep her pointed at that star.”
Simple enough.
A couple of hours later I woke up and found her exactly where I left her.
Hands on the wheel.
Eyes on the star.
Still following instructions.
The only problem was that the star had moved.
We were nearly thirty degrees off course.
Funny thing about life.
Sometimes we don’t drift because we’re careless.
Sometimes we drift because we’re faithfully following a heading that no longer makes sense.
The world changes.
Circumstances change.
We change.
Every now and then it’s worth lifting your eyes from the thing you’ve been following and asking:
Is this still taking me where I want to go?
