I got really sick about a week ago, probably the worst I’ve ever experienced in my life. It started with chills one night, followed by shakes and profuse sweating, ok I got the flu, it’s been going around. No stomach issues no diarrhea though. During the day I’d feel tired but ok, even being productive or swimming and socializing a bit, at night fever, shakes, sweating, body aches, this went on for about 5 days. Then the fever started to subside, and I had a couple decent nights, feeling like I’m on the mend, but I started getting these aches in my feet, ankles, calves, and knees.. These got more and more severe over the couple days of “recovery”. But I’m a stubborn son of a bitch, and I’m going to beat this thing. I’d only taken an occasion Ibuprofen at this point at night, at my wife’s insistence to help with the fever. I want to say it was the 7th/8th night and I got up to use the restroom at 3:30am, my lower legs just rebelled, I had to hobble the 4’ to the bathroom supporting myself as I went.. I crawled back into bed and woke my wife, “Ok I think it’s time for antibiotics” she gets me some. I awake at 8am and can’t stand up at all, it’s just pain, push through it, nope, feet are on fire, ankles won’t bend, shins and calves locked up, knees sharp pain and “cracking” I crawl on my ass up to the salon, feeling my wrists and elbows start to tighten up as well. Jonathan and his wife were already staying on the boat, but we call in for more reinforcements, Butch and his son Oso (Bear) who own the floating bar we’re anchored next too. I’m 6’3” 220 and both these men dwarf me! They help manhandle me off my boat into their launcha, off one boat and into another when your legs aren’t working is rather daunting! They take me to a friend’s (Chris) whose pier is wide enough to “walk” down 3 abreast, they get me into a cab. Jonathan who speaks excellent Spanish and has spent years doing missionary work in South America accompanies me to the hospital, a couple hours later, after the bloodiest blood draw ever, it got everywhere! I’m sucking down IV fluids and massive doses of antibiotics. They think it’s Dengue at first, it’s not, it was Leptospyrosis a severe bacterial infection known to cause severe lower leg pain, before attacking your liver and kidneys.. I picked it up walking around barefoot in places/conditions where I shouldn’t, wet, puddles, & livestock, 100% my fault. The diagnosis is unconfirmed as the test would take days and cost much, while the treatment for a toxic bacterial load is pretty universal. 8 hours after the AB were administered I could start hobbling around unsupported, the next day all the pain was gone. Today is my last course of the AB and we can close the chapter. It was surreal, my mind felt sharp, but my body was breaking down quickly. A very humbling experience. Thankfully I had several great friends and a wonderful wife to get my stubborn ass the help I needed.. Total hospital bill including all meds… $99 and aside from leaking my blood everywhere during the draw, it was a rather positive experience, the hospital that is, not the illness, that f*cking sucked, I 100% do NOT recommend.
