Good morning!
There are cliffs in this world that look permanent.
Mountains that seem immovable.
Stone that appears capable of outlasting damn near everything.
And then there’s water.
One drop doesn’t accomplish much.
Neither does one wave.
But water has something stone doesn’t.
Time.
It returns.
Again.
And again.
And again.
The wave that strikes the cliff this morning doesn’t need to knock it down.
It only needs to do what water does.
Then leave the rest to the next wave.
There’s something in that I’ve had to learn the hard way.
I spent a lot of my life believing progress should be visible.
Work harder.
Push harder.
Solve the problem.
Get the result.
And there’s certainly a time for that.
But some things don’t respond to force.
Building character.
Learning a craft.
Changing a habit.
Earning trust.
Healing a relationship.
Becoming the person you’d like to be.
Those things happen more like water working on stone.
A little today.
A little tomorrow.
Often so slowly you can’t see anything changing at all.
Until one day you look back and discover the landscape isn’t what it used to be.
We tend to admire dramatic change.
Water teaches something quieter.
You don’t have to move the mountain today.
Just return tomorrow.
There’s an old lesson hiding in every shoreline on Earth:
Persistence doesn’t always look powerful while it’s happening.
But give it enough time.
Good morning from the boat.
