Discipline.
Fear.
Preparation.
Character.
It doesn’t always create those things.
Sometimes it simply exposes what was already there.
I learned that at sea.
A system can look perfectly fine tied to the dock.
Then the weather changes.
Loads increase.
Something starts leaking.
Something else starts rattling.
And suddenly you find out what was actually sound and what only looked sound while conditions were easy.
Life does much the same thing.
We don’t really know how steady we are when everything is going our way.
We learn something about ourselves when plans fail.
When money gets tight.
When somebody disappoints us.
When fatigue sets in.
When the easy answer disappears.
Pressure isn’t pleasant.
And I’m not one of those people who thinks we ought to go looking for suffering just to prove how tough we are.
But when pressure does arrive, it can teach us something useful.
Not just about the situation.
About us.
Maybe the question isn’t simply, “How do I get out from under this?”
Maybe sometimes it’s:
What is this pressure showing me?
