Good evening.
Pour water into a glass and it becomes the shape of the glass.
Pour it into a bowl and it becomes the shape of the bowl.
Send it down a narrow channel and it narrows.
Give it room and it spreads.
Water adapts to the space it occupies without somehow becoming less itself.
I’ve been thinking about that tonight.
Life asks us to take a lot of different shapes.
Sailor.
Husband.
Father.
Leader.
Student.
Teacher.
Friend.
Sometimes all of them in the same damn day.
The danger is believing that adapting to a situation means we’ve somehow become inauthentic.
I don’t think it does.
There’s a difference between changing who you are and changing how you meet the moment.
A good leader doesn’t speak to everyone the same way.
A good sailor doesn’t trim the sails the same way in every wind.
A good friend knows when to talk and when to shut up and listen.
That isn’t inconsistency.
It’s awareness.
Water doesn’t insist that the world make room for the shape it prefers.
It meets the container it has.
And when the container changes, the water moves again.
Maybe character isn’t rigidity.
Maybe character is knowing what must remain constant while everything else is allowed to adjust.
Values.
Integrity.
The things you’ve decided matter.
Hold onto those.
Let the shape change.
Good evening from the boat.
