There is a particular kind of trust at sea. When you turn in below deck, you can no longer see the horizon. You cannot watch the weather. You cannot see the ship appearing in the distance or notice the wind beginning to shift. You sleep because someone else has the watch. You trust that they will remain alert. That they will notice what changes. That they will make the small corrections—and wake you before a small problem becomes a large one. That trust is rarely spoken. It doesn’t need to keep checking. It simply rests, believing the responsibility is in capable hands. Responsibility is what trust looks like from the other side. Life places us on both sides of that exchange. Sometimes we are the ones who need to rest and trust another person to carry the load. Sometimes we are the ones entrusted with someone’s confidence, safety, work, heart, or future. They may never see everything we do on their behalf. That is the point. Being trusted is more than a compliment. It is an obligation. Someone is resting because they believe you are awake. Stand the watch accordingly.
