Lovebug gone wrong. On May 4, 2000, the ILOVEYOU computer worm infected over ten million Windows computers, spreading through email with the subject line "ILOVEYOU" and attachment "LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.TXT.vbs". The creator was Onel de Guzman, a 24-year-old computer science student from the Philippines. De Guzman had submitted a thesis proposal to create a password-stealing program, but his professors rejected it, writing "we don't produce burglars" and "this is illegal" in the margins. The rejection cost him his degree. He later created the ILOVEYOU virus to steal internet passwords because he couldn't afford to pay for access. In just five hours, it spread across Asia, Europe and North America, affecting major companies like Ford, Microsoft, and government agencies including the Pentagon and British Parliament. The outbreak caused an estimated $5.5-15 billion in damages worldwide. Turns out "I love you" can be the three most expensive words ever typed. What's the oldest computer virus you remember hearing about? #CryptokNews #ViralHistory #Cryptok #Viral #Hype
