“The world belongs to the energetic.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson
One of the things I loved most about rebuilding the farm was solving problems with my hands.
Building fences.
Repairing old structures.
Working wood.
Eventually building my own log home.
There is something deeply satisfying about standing back at the end of the day and seeing tangible progress.
A wall standing where there was none before.
A gate swinging true.
A roofline finally coming together after working through problem after problem.
Craftsmanship teaches patience in a very honest way.
Wood doesn’t care about frustration.
Tools don’t respond to excuses.
And nature has a way of humbling rushed work.
You slow down.
You adapt.
You learn to think differently.
And somewhere in that process, the work begins shaping the craftsman as much as the craftsman shapes the work.
I think that is something modern life is starving for:
the quiet satisfaction of creating something real.
Not consuming.
Not performing.
Building.
